1939 - 2000

It is with great sadness and a sense of tremendous loss that I report the passing of a fellow HAM and longtime, trusted friend. Arnold Russell Worthington, “Russ” (WA4POD) at age 57, passed away in his sleep Sunday night, February 20, 2005, following years of debilitating illnesses. Although a small man in stature, Russ was a giant among giants in the Amateur Radio community. He had been a HAM since his teenage years, active in many aspects of the hobby, and could be heard frequently on the 40 and 75 meter bands as well as the local VHF and UHF repeaters. He held an Extra Class Amateur license and a First Class Phone license.

Russ had been serving as the Trustee of the ENC (Grifton) Repeater W4NBR at the time of his death and was also the designer and builder of this repeater. He was instrumental in the building and maintenance of the W4OIX repeater (Kinston) and several other UHF repeaters in the surrounding area.

Russ had been a member of the Kinston Amateur Radio Society (KARS) since the late 1950s, having served as its president and receiving the HAM of the Year Award on several occasions. Russ retired from ITT in 1986 following a long career as a microwave designer and technician. He was also well known on the Coastal Carolina Emergency Net in earlier years.

In most recent years, Russ occupied his time with HAM radio. He strongly supported the Volunteer Fire Department of Snow Hill, NC, maintaining their communications equipment as well as maintaining the equipment for the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

On a personal note, a deep void has appeared in my life as my “teacher” and friend has passed away. I know that I speak for many HAMS, firefighters, and friends by saying that his compelling presence will always remain in our hearts. He touched the lives of many individuals in this area, and for that, Russ Worthington will remain forever a giant among giants.

It is with sadness that we report that WA0AFW, Dr. Roland E. Erikson, has became a silent key. He passed away on 16 November 2005 at about 1 AM in the morning. He recently was involved in a traffic accident and apparently did not heal from all the injuries. Roland was very active in the club in attending meetings, area hamfests and a regular on the JARS net. He will be missed dearly.

Thomas C. Polk, 43, of Roseville, died Thursday, June 7, 2007, in a motorcycle accident in Huntsville, Ala. He was born Feb. 19, 1964, in Detroit.

Mr. Polk, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, worked as a superintendent in the field of commercial construction.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; children, Jeremy and Heather Polk, Lanette (Craig) Sanders and Tim (Melissa) Estep; grandchildren, Taylor, Kara and Jacob; siblings, Tammy (Tom) Lerchenfelt, Marilyn (Michael) Loftus, Kathleen (James) Irwin, Eileen (Fred) Abrams, William (Marianne), Stephen (Patricia), David (Anna), Gerald (Dawn) and Edward Hause; and sister-in-law, Gail Polk.

He was predeceased by his brother, David Polk.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joan of Arc Church, 21620 Greater Mack, St. Clair Shores. Interment will be in Great Lake National Cemetery, Holly.

Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Wednesday at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. Additional visitation is 9-10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

I would visit Tom at his home in Goldsboro when he was at Seymour Johnson on the KC-10 Tankers. I was from the area in Seven Springs and would drop by when I was down from Raleigh as we talked on HAM radio.

I would also talk to him when he was in the air over Raleigh and sometimes a few states over coming from the Gulf of Mexico on a refueling.

I once traded 2 home made country ham biscuits my mother made from our family smoke house for a 2 meter beam antenna he built from an old TV antenna. He said those were the best ham biscuits he ever had. I still have that antenna in storage and I will always cherish it because it would always remind me of Tom. My heart goes out to the family and from us Amateur Radio friends in North Carolina who knew him.

Bob was educated at Campbell College and NCSU. He served a tour of duty with the N.C. National Guard and the U.S. Air Force in Korea, Japan and Okinawa during the Korean War. He was an Electrical Engineer for ITT then went on to Marketing for CDE.

Marvin William "Bill" Edwards, Jr., K4BWC, 70, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and his beloved wife, Gail L. Edwards on March 20, 2008. Bill was born in Sumter County, SC on February 11, 1938 to the late Marvin William Edwards, Sr. and Sarah Sparks Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a native of Sumter, SC. He attended Edmunds High School and Clemson University. He was a Amateur (Ham) Radio operator for more than 50 years. He worked for the U-Haul Company for more than 20 years. He was also President and CEO of Omega Electronics and has lived in Raleigh for 37 years.
Memorial service 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2008 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 with Reverend Hunter Preston officiating.

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.

Survivors: sons, William Dwayne Edwards of Wake Forest, Marvin David Edwards and wife, Rita C. of Wake Forest, Eugene Darryl Edwards and wife, Linda M. of Wendell; grandchildren, Nicole Edwards, Justin Edwards, Michael Edwards, Samantha Edwards.

Bill will be missed by many friends at the Ham Fest, he was a supporter of many local clubs, repeater systems and a friend of HF users throughout.

Harry Gates passed away July 7th at home. Harry was a good friend to Amateur Radio and he helped anyone with technical problems and repairs with his high skill as an electronics "bench" technician. He helped us work on some of our Carolina 440 repeaters especially some of the power supply repairs and work with the GE Mastr II vintage equipment. Harry was employed with Southern Communications in Goldsboro, N.C. for many years until they shut down a few years ago and served many Public Safety organizations in Wayne & Johnston Counties with two-way radio communications. I had the pleasure meeting him when I was a Wayne County Fire Officer in Seven Springs back in the Late 70's early 80's with him doing the communications work for the County. He will be missed by many.
